Reclaiming the backyard in Main Beach

Adam Thompson · Yard Clean-Up · Main Beach

The story

Living in Main Beach, you get used to council collections that are always months away. The rental I'd moved into had a yard that the previous tenants had basically used as a storage area. The agent agreed I could get it cleared and claim the cost.

A rusted swing set, a sandpit full of rainwater, a deflated pool, a broken outdoor table, and a mountain of plastic pots and garden mulch bags.

Main Beach is a mix of low-rise older units, waterfront towers and marina businesses, and getting things out isn't always simple. Narrow driveways and time-limited parking mean we bring smaller trucks where needed.

They offered a time the next morning. I asked if they needed me to move anything to the kerb first, and they said no, they'd take it from where it was.

They arrived a few minutes early, introduced themselves and did a quick walk-around. The price they gave me was a bit under what I'd budgeted, which was a pleasant surprise.

One of the bags had broken glass in it. They spotted it straight away, double-bagged it, and checked the grass afterwards with a rake.

The space is unrecognisable. I keep walking past it just to look. I'd use them again without thinking about it, and I've already passed the number on to my sister.

If I'm honest, the hardest part was deciding to do it. Once that was done, it was easy.
